Certainly one of America\’s most favorite writers is John Grisham. Since 1989, his published works have sold over 250 million copies worldwide. He has written 17 legal fiction stories with a brand new legal fiction due out soon, four non-legal fiction stories and one non-fiction tale. There were ten movies produced from his works so far with another expected in 2012.
The very first movie from one of his novels was \”The Firm\” from 1993. Tom Cruise plays a Harvard law school graduate who starts working for a Memphis law firm with connections to the underworld. Also starring Jeanne Tripplehorn and Gene Hackman. Again in 1993, the next movie from a Grisham book arrived on the scene. \”The Pelican Brief\” starring Julia Roberts and Denzel Washington.
\”The Client\” starring the late Brad Renfro, Susan Sarandon and Tommy Lee Jones was released in 1994. This film follows the path of a young boy who accidentally witnesses a suicide and as a result pursued by the mafia for information they think he discovered from the dying man.
The initial published and the one that many say is Grisham\’s best story to date is \”A Time to Kill\”. This novel was made into a movie in 1996. The actual movie presented a new and upcoming actor in the main role, Matthew McConaughey, also starring Sandra Bullock, Samuel L. Jackson and Kevin Spacey. One more movie from 1996 was \”The Chamber\” starring Chris O\’Donnell, Gene Hackman and Faye Dunaway.
In 1997, \”The Rainmaker\” with lead actor Matt Damon as a rookie lawyer who takes on the case of a boy denied medical treatment by a big insurance company. In 1998, the only movie from Grisham which was based on an unpublished manuscript was released, \”The Gingerbread Man\” starring Kenneth Branagh and Robert Downey, Jr.
From the four non-legal works of fiction by Grisham, two have been made into films, \”A Painted House\” in 2003 and the holiday favorite, \”Christmas with the Kranks\” starring Tim Allen and Jamie Lee Curtis which was adapted from the amusing tale \”Skipping Christmas\”.
\”The Runaway Jury\” arrived on the scene in 2003. This film featured Gene Hackman, Dustin Hoffman, John Cusack and Rachel Weisz. Grisham\’s twenty-first novel, \”The Associate\”, only released as a published work in January 2009, is going to be released as a movie in 2012.
