Listening to online music has never been easier with the advances in computer technology. While it is possible to listen to music via a modem and dialup connection, it is far more enjoyable with faster connections as there tends to be less latency with the streaming music feed.

The first step before playing music online is to ensure that a program is installed that can play the music. The Windows operating system comes installed with Windows Media Player that can play most types of music that users encounter online.

More popular programs that allow you to listen to music online may include Windows Media Player, RealPlayer, and WinAmp. There are certainly others, but these are more common.

There are basically two major ways to listen to music online. Loading music playlists into a software music player or listening to music on embedded players on Internet sites.
Embedded players usually are located on music portals. They provide access to the most basic features like Play, pause, controlling the volume and skipping songs.

Once you’ve determined that you have a reliable internet connection and, if applicable, a program to receive and playback the audio stream, you have to find a site that streams the kind of music you want to hear. This is probably best done by going to your favorite search engine site, such
as: Yahoo or Google.

You can enter a search term like “free online music”, which should retrieve plenty of results. Most of the sites listed should contain links to playlists of free music matching whatever genre you wish to listen. Anything from Top 40, Acid Jazz, to Heavy Metal, and Death Metal. The internet has practically any kind of music you can imagine, even genres you probably can’t imagine.

Music playback can usually be started by simply clicking on a music link on the website. Those music playlists are usually automatically associated with the software music player on the computer system which will automatically load the music in question.

There may be a dialog asking whether you want to allow the file to play on your machine. This is only a security precaution to ensure you requested to let the file run from the remote machine. If you choose to allow this and continue, your program should start playing the streaming music you selected.

The music can then be enjoyed while playing on the system or on the Internet site.
